During their three week stay on the lovely campus of Transylvania University in Lexington, the student artists are immersed in a rigorous schedule of daily seminars, master-classes, lectures, hands-on workshops and field trips. While each student specializes in one art form, all students participate in structured, interdisciplinary arts experiences designed to familiarize them with the joys and challenges of disciplines other than their own.
Many GSA students come from areas of Kentucky where specialized arts instruction is limited or simply not available. Regardless of the level of their prior training, whether they hail from rural or urban areas, these teens are often artistically isolated. Through the generosity of our donors, this program provides critical support for an exceptionally talented group of young people while fostering discipline and achievement. GSA is an honor and an incentive for further accomplishments. The long-term economic and social vitality of the Commonwealth can only enhanced if we nurture and develop the widest range of talents of our citizens, both academic and artistic.
The students selected for GSA are expected to follow a high standard of personal conduct. Mutual respect, excellent work habits and a cooperative spirit are all necessary aspects of community life throughout the program. By living and learning in a community of artists, students are led to understand how they may be of service to the cause of the arts in general, and to their communities and schools in particular. Many opportunities exist for students to develop interpersonal skills which will enhance their transition to college life and also serve them well in many other settings throughout their lives.
GSA plays a vital role in preparing its students for their pursuit of careers not only in the arts, but in all facets of professional life requiring leadership, critical thinking, exceptional communication and expressive skills, and understanding of our multi-cultural world. Upon returning to their homes and schools, GSA students are more mature, focused and motivated. They are well on their way to becoming aware, involved citizens, real assets to their communities and the Commonwealth.
